I was newly pregnant, working full time and still teaching at a local gym after work. So I thought it would be a great idea to plan to train for a half marathon after I had the baby to help lose the unwanted “baby weight”. I went on a search to every consignment shop/website I could to find the perfect jogging stroller. Finally I found one: Great condition, barely used it advertised… Awesome! This was a perfect find… SOLD!!
Fast forward a few months. I had my baby at the end of April. What perfect weather to train for a half marathon right?? I had full intentions of signing up for St. Jude Half Marathon because it is so rewarding to know that your contributions go to such a wonderful cause. Plus, you get to run past the hospital and have those sweet babies cheer you on as you run in their honor. It is such a fun race to run. I ran this very race a few years ago. I trained hard and completed the race without stopping (which was my ultimate goal)and finished in approximately 2 hours and 15 minuets.
So about 6 weeks after the baby was born the registration opened for the St Jude half marathon (keep in mind that if you do not sign up for this race within a day or so of the opening of registration, you will not get a spot… its a very popular race to run!). Suddenly my grandfather had a heart attack with a massive brain aneurysm and was put on life support. The whole family spent several days at the hospital as he held on for dear life. Needless to say, signing up for a half marathon was the least of my concerns at that time. So I did not get to sign up for St. Jude 😦
A dear friend of mine tagged me in a post one day about a half marathon in Orange beach that you run down the main beach road as you come to the finish line. Who would not want to run on the beach?!? So of course I said, “sign me up”. And she did… plus my husband and a few other friends we knew. I set a personal goal to try to beat my original half marathon time of 2hours 15mins. We started a Facebook group, posted training programs, motivation pictures, met up to complete our long runs… until it started getting cold. It is REALLY hard to take a young baby out into the bone chilling cold weather to run. No matter how “perfect” my jogging stroller was, it would not keep him from catching a cold, my husband was training too I could not leave the baby home with him to go run, my chest was still too big and the two sports bras were not enough to hold those babies in place. We would put the baby in child care at the gym and run on the back track, but 24 circles was about all that I could handle on that merry go round. And so the excuses began… I basically quit training and blamed it on the difficulty to train with a baby. Which is true!
So… The weekend of the race I made myself a new goal… I wanted to at least cross the finish line before the cutoff time for the half marathon (which was 3 hours I think) and I prayed ALOT! We ate a good dinner that night and got to bed at a decent time. I got up that morning with such mixed emotions. I knew this was about to be a tough day so I pulled out my bag of Advocare products. I took my morning ENERGY cocktail of Spark and Thermoplus and I let that kick in. I ate my VO2 Prime bar for breakfast and said another prayer. Right before we walked out of the door I pulled out my secret weapon… O2 Gold!!! I popped two of those and waited for the magic to happen.
I ran the first 8 miles without stopping. I walked some about mile 8.5 to get some water and to refuel with some Rehydrate gel that I had tucked in the ipod pocket of my running pants. I stretched to get the cramps out of my calves, went to the bathroom, and we were off again. I finished the race in 2 hours and 30 minutes which was just 15 minutes off of my original time and goal that I had set. When we got back to the condo we did a few rounds of contrast bath between the hot tub and freezing cold January swimming pool to help with the inflammation. I ended my night with a tall glass of Rehydrate and Nighttime Recovery.
Guys… THESE PRODUCTS WORK!!! I am in NO WAY promoting running a half marathon without proper training, but there is no way that I could have completed this half marathon without my AdvoCare products. They really do help. So if you are a long distance runner, or even someone who is looking to train for their first half marathon please consider these products. They will make your life so much easier during AND after the race! If you want to learn more about the products or have questions please visit us at Wellnesskings.com. Happy running 🙂
